Houston Disaster Declaration Issued as Recovery Efforts Begin

At least seven people have died and severe damage has been reported after a series of devastating storms swept through Houston, Texas, on Thursday night. The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

According to officials, the tornado was an EF-1 with associated winds of 110 mph. It caused significant damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, including downed power lines, shattered windows, and uprooted trees.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has issued a disaster declaration, activating emergency response plans and requesting state and federal assistance. Search and rescue teams are currently working to locate and assist those affected by the storms.

Videos and photos shared by residents show the tornado ripping through the city, leaving a trail of debris in its wake. Witnesses described the storm as terrifying, with high winds and torrential rain causing widespread damage.

The storms began as a tornado watch at around 2:45 p.m. CST, which later turned into multiple severe thunderstorm warnings. The National Weather Service is continuing to monitor the situation and issue updates as more information becomes available.
