Stonehenge to Align with the Sun on the Solstices
Stonehenge, the world-famous prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, was built to align with the Sun on the solstices, the longest and shortest days of the year. The Summer Solstice, which occurs around June 21st, is a significant event for many cultures and is often celebrated with festivals and gatherings.
In 2024, the Summer Solstice will be celebrated from the evening of Thursday, June 20th, to the morning of Friday, June 21st. During this time, the Sun will rise directly over the Heel Stone, a large stone located outside the main circle of Stonehenge. This alignment occurs only twice a year, on the Summer and Winter Solstices.
English Heritage, the organization that manages Stonehenge, will be hosting a special music event on Thursday, June 20th, 2024, as part of the Summer Solstice celebrations. The event will feature live music, food, and drinks, and attendees will have the opportunity to witness the sunrise over Stonehenge.
Admission to Stonehenge during the Summer Solstice is free of charge. However, visitors are encouraged to purchase a Solstice 2 Day Ticket Special, which includes a tent pitch and one ticket to the festival. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online or at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre.
