Jeremy Corbyn: A Profile

Early Life and Education

Jeremy Bernard Corbyn was born on May 26, 1949, in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England. His father was an electrical engineer and his mother was a teacher. Corbyn attended Adams' Grammar School and then studied at North London Polytechnic, where he earned a degree in geography.

Political Career

Corbyn entered politics in the early 1970s. He was elected to the Haringey London Borough Council in 1974 and served as its leader from 1979 to 1983. In 1983, he was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Islington North, a position he has held ever since.

Corbyn is a member of the Labour Party and has served as its leader from 2015 to 2020. He is known for his socialist and pacifist views. He has been a vocal critic of the Iraq War and has campaigned for nuclear disarmament.

In 2017, Corbyn led the Labour Party to a surprise second place finish in the general election. He has since been praised for his ability to connect with voters and for his role in the party's resurgence.
